With just over a week until the 31 January self assessment deadline, around 3.3 million people still need to file their 2024/2025 tax return.
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) said 8.6 million people have so far sent in their information.
The tax authority is urging those who haven’t filed to do so or risk missing the deadline and facing an automatic £100 penalty.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s chief customer Officer, said:
“Don’t leave it until deadline day. Filing now will give you peace of mind that your tax return is completed and if you have tax to pay, you have a week to arrange payment.
“If you’re worried about paying your tax bill, you may be able to set up a payment plan online – search ‘difficulties paying HMRC’ on GOV.UK.”
This year’s deadline is on a Saturday. If you need to speak to an adviser, phone lines are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. On Saturday 31 January, HMRC will offer webchat support through its online services helpdesk.
From 5 April, sole traders and landlords will an income over £50,000 will be required to submit quarterly tax updates to HMRC as a result of the latest Making Tax Digital reforms.
