More than 340 people submitted their Self Assessment tax return during the last hour of 2025, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has said.
According to the tax authority, 342 individuals sent in their details during the final 60 minutes of the year, while 19,789 people filed their tax return on New Year’s Day.
More than 6.36 million taxpayers have submitted their 2024/25 Self Assessment so far ahead of the 31 January deadline, which means around 5.65 million still need to do it. Those who miss the deadline could face an initial late filing penalty of £100.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s chief customer officer, said:
“New Year is a great time to start afresh. What better way than to ensure your tax affairs are in order for another year than completing your tax return. If you have yet to start, the clock is ticking, go to GOV.UK and start today.”
In other figures, HMRC said 4,606 tax returns were submitted on Christmas Day, with 22,350 on Christmas Eve and 10,479 on Boxing Day.
