Barriers and enablers

In a nutshell, key barriers to becoming a Magic Million business are:

  • Rule-driven, overly systemised culture and unnecessarily complex organisational structures
  • Inappropriate leadership
  • Initiative fatigue – some teams are tired of being put through business initiatives which are supposed to transform their businesses (ISO9000, IiP, Love the Customer…)
  • Inappropriate aspirations and energy

Now I’d like to look at some enablers to becoming a Magic Million business.

For the Magic Million mindset to become a fundamental part of how things are done, the need to achieve new and better ways of doing things must be greater than the need for security and comfort (that maintains the status quo).

We expect some combination of the following to be present to precipitate successful Magic Million behaviour:

  1. Charismatic leadership (and not always by consensus)
  2. Attitude - A ‘can do…’, ‘yes, and…’, ‘blame-free’ culture that recognises that success and failure go hand-in-hand - a ‘willingness to pay the price’
  3. A fast-moving, exciting business environment
  4. Rewards and systems that motivate the individuals concerned
  5. Employing the right people
  6. Commitment to gaining a real understanding of Strategy, Marketing, and Teams
  7. LUCK
