Credit crunch sees more people shopping online and online firms vying for position.
UK consumers are increasingly turning to search engines and price comparison websites to help deal with the credit crunch and economic downturns. According to Marc Summers, a pioneer of internet applications in business and commerce, businesses whose websites do not appear on the front page of Google will miss out on this opportunity: "Companies spend a lot of time and money developing their websites but it is only worthwhile if those sites are highly visible."The research, carried out by Hitwise in September 2008, found that more and more people are using the web to find cheaper goods and services. Statistics show that there are now 42 million internet users in the UK - this is 68.6% of the population. "For this reason," says Summers, "it is vital that companies ensure that they have the best search engine positioning possible. If your site is not in the top five search results, you will be losing business." The research was was conducted by Hitwise, an Experian research company. The increase in online searches for price comparison sites in the past year is 20%. Comments (0)
