Network security and redundancy are cited as the biggest challenges facing SMEs in 2008.

SMEs fear their networks could pose the biggest threat to business prosperity in 2008, according to a survey conducted by business Internet service provider (ISP) Star.

Fifty-nine per cent of SMB leaders polled didn’t think their networks have the necessary security tools to withstand an increasing array of email and Internet-borne threats.

Fifty-three per cent fear they have insufficient redundancy built into their corporate networks to function in the event that a key link fails.

Ben White, CEO of Star, explains that small and medium-sized business networks have become increasingly complex over the past couple of years as they use new Internet technologies to drive growth and reach new markets.

With this increasing reliance on Internet technologies however, comes the increased risk of a single failure taking out their entire infrastructure.

“Our survey results illustrate the importance that business leaders are placing on overcoming the additional challenges presented in terms of building resilience and fail over into SME networks. ISPs have a responsibility to help SMEs adopt and implement the necessary Internet technologies to ensure their business remains operational at all times,” White adds.

Star’s top 5 tips for network best practice are:

Plan for failure – This ensures that in the event of a failure you know what to expect from your ISP or hosting provider.

Educate your staff – Most security breaches can be avoided through adequate staff training that nurtures a security culture within the company.

Consider your options – Investigate MPLS as a viable technology for connecting branch offices and providing network resilience. It is no longer an enterprise only technology.

Keep your network updated – Make sure servers and computers are always updated with the latest security patches.

Seek specialist advice – Technology is continually developing, becoming more and more sophisticated. Specialists can provide a security assessment and advise you on any weaknesses or steps to take.
