The Advert Man is a Derby-based SME that aims to sell advertising space on lorries and trucks. SME caught up with founder Ed Hollands to find out more…
How many employees do you have?
Currently it’s just myself, however I am looking to employ a few people in the near future. Especially with my first nationwide campaign going up, it will be really helpful to have a few extra hands when installing adverts.
What do you look for when you are recruiting?
When I recruit I will be looking at their attitudes more than anything else. They have to fit the culture I want to create as well as have the motivation to go out there and help change the advertising industry.
What attributes are necessary in your business?
Friendly personality – a lot of our approaches in speaking to our customers are direct, either via phone or in person, so a friendly and easy to get on with personality is perfect for building a relationship with them. (Being naturally funny helps too).
Perseverance – with that said a lot of people still don’t get what we do, so the ability to keep on going is ideal. I have been told that advertising sales are one of the hardest industries to get into, but I don’t think that would have stopped me anyway.
What makes you a good employer to work for?
My vision is that as an employer, I will be seen to “muck in” with the rest of the team and be available anytime for any problem. If I have an office the door will always be open.
This has been developed by watching some local Derby entrepreneurs in action, most notably Graham Mulholland and Sean Price.
