Red Herring Games are creators of murder mystery dinner party games and personalised events, with a very extensive online offering. SME spoke to Jo Smedley of Red Herring Games to find out more….
How many employees do you have?
At present 2 – myself and Emma Fairhall. The dog doesn’t really count. Though she’s a good shredder at the moment being only 8 weeks old.
Last year we had 3 WTE but had to make cuts as we had financial pressures due to a glitch in the website dropping our sales drastically for an entire quarter.
What do you look for when you are recruiting?
Someone with a bit about themselves who can hold their own in a really mixed office environment and who has great customer care and a good telephone and email manner. And someone we can train up to do all the unusual jobs we do day to day in the office. The last few times we’ve used the apprentice scheme to find the right candidate and had a fantastic girl working for us for 2 years thanks to that scheme.
What attributes are necessary in your business?
Excellent communication skills, problem solving, and the ability to handle customer queries and complaints.
Also we need a strong work ethic as we all pull our weight in the office!
What makes you a good employer to work for?
I’m incredibly flexible when it comes to working patterns and open to hour changes to suit children. We’re a child friendly environment and we have had kids at the office before while mothers are working as I know how hard it is as I have kids of my own.
We have fun in the office, we enjoy our work and the challenges it brings and there’s often a lot of banter here.
I’m also friendly and approachable and keen to see staff achieve what they want to in life.
