Silicon Dock – at the heart of Northern Ireland’s innovation ecosystem

The new North West Innovation Centre in Derry opened in 2014

Dr Norman Apsley, CEO of the Northern Ireland Science Park, talks about Silicon Dock in Northern Ireland and how it helps knowledge-based companies grow together by facilitating collaborative connections, skills development and commercial opportunities.

In the US they talk about Silicon Valley. Northern Ireland has Silicon Dock – 140 companies housed in eight buildings over 25 acres in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter, a new Innovation Centre in Derry and a further outreach in Letterkenny, Donegal.

Software, telecoms, financial engineering, digital media, health/bio, gaming, clean tech, aeronautical and business services are all represented in this busy 2,400-strong commercial community.

As one of the investments made by the Northern Ireland, UK, European and US governments following the Good Friday Agreement, the Northern Ireland Science Park (NISP) was established to assist with the long term development of the local economy by acting as a catalyst for change and enhancing the opportunities for knowledge-based wealth creation.
