Funding available to develop UK-China research partnerships

The British Council and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) are taking applications for grants to run international research workshops for UK and Chinese researchers, as part of Researcher Links.

Researcher Links bring together early-career researchers from the UK and a partner country to allow them to make international connections that can improve the quality of their research. Once funded, grants are available for early-career researchers in the UK and the partner country to attend.

The grants are funded under the UK-China Research and Innovation Partnership Fund, otherwise known as the Newton Fund in the UK, a £375 million fund which, through science and innovation partnerships, promotes the economic development and welfare of poor people in partnering countries.

The Newton Fund aims to promote the economic development and welfare of either the partner countries or, through working with the partner country, to address the problems of poor people around the world.

Applications, which close on 2 December must fall into one or more of the following key supported fields: health/life sciences, environmental technologies, food and water security, energy and urbanisation.

Open to Export launches online Export Action Plan to boost SMEs’ export goals

Government-backed initiative Open to Export is further accelerating the ambitions of SMEs who are seeking to export via a new online service that produces a focused Export Action Plan to steer them in the right direction.

The Export Action Plan is the latest addition to the Open to Export's online offering, which is dedicated to helping UK businesses prepare to sell overseas by giving them free access to online information, support and advice.

The step-by-step Export Action Plan, which is now accessible on Open to Export's recently upgraded website, takes visitors through five key action points before producing a report they can take to trade advisors.

Open to Export chief executive Lesley Batchelor OBE said: “With a growing number of SMEs identifying the opportunities that trading globally presents – but daunted by taking what they see as a big step –- our Export Action Plan is a great starting point. It allows them to focus their goals and talk with confidence to the trade advisors and banks who can help the venture to succeed.”
