The CBI will present its manifesto for business to the leading four contenders for London Mayor at a hustings event in the capital on Wednesday.

The hustings event is a joint event between the CBI, London First and the London Chamber of Commerce at the KPMG offices in Salisbury Square, London.

Current Mayor and Labour party candidate Ken Livingstone, his Conservative challenger Boris Johnson, Brian Paddick from the Liberal Democrats, and Sian Berry of the Green Party will attend and put their case to assembled business leaders.

Speaking ahead of the event, Nigel Bourne, director of the CBI's London region, said that the business community understood what is needed to maintain London's global pre-eminence in the face of competition from international rivals and was ready and willing to work with the Mayor to keep the capital as the world's greatest city.

“The CBI manifesto is a direct call to all the candidates to address the priorities of the business community and deliver policies which build on our strong foundations and deliver further prosperity and productivity for the capital,” Bourne added.

The CBI Business Manifesto sets out seven priorities the successful candidate should focus on to maintain London's competitive edge and provide continued prosperity to the city.

These are:

  • Continued investment in infrastructure and delivery of major projects such as Crossrail;
  • Strengthening the capital's skills base to compete in the increasingly global world;
  • Delivering green policies which tackle climate change and maintain economic growth;
  • An attractive and secure business environment which draws investment to the city;
  • Ensuring a successful Olympic and Paralympics Games which have a positive legacy;
  • Meeting the planning needs of a modern, successful, growing world city;
  • Open dialogue and engagement with business to deliver on these priorities.

“Business is ready to play its part in maintaining London's prosperity - it is vital that the mayoral candidates listen to and work with employers to ensure that London remains a world-leading place to live, work and do business,” Bourne concluded.
